You're right. I think there's something deep about the celebrations we have at this time of year which are untouched by the kind of troubles we're living through. People have celebrated for millennia in one way or another, way before we came up with penicillin, vaccines, central heating, supermarkets, etc. - times when life was grim and uncertain by comparison.
