SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT

It's my birthday, I'm still here alive and well and creating, I love each of my family and friends and they love me, I have a pleasant roof over my head, no debts, enough to eat, freedom, and all the art materials I need. I am still asking questions and feeling amazed. So this day, and every day, is my time to be grateful and to wish for all the blessings I have to somehow be expanded and distributed to all those who have none.

Here's my selfie for today.

Something else to raise a smile: The Festival of Love is currently drawing crowds on the South Bank and I couldn't resist snapping a photo of this happy couple in front of a merry-go-round.

Leslee, thanks and may the rest of summer be good to you too.

Adam, that's a great birthday thought. My thanks to you and the Doctor.

Barbara, muito obrigado querida. Hope all is going well for you.

Ellena, every year adds new wrinkles but I'm learning (slowly) to not give a damn. Thank you.

Sherrie, there were so many candles I had to breathe twice!

Jean, it was sweet, yes indeed. Hope yours in cable car was too?

Happy, happy birthday, dear Natalie! Sorry to miss it by a day.

And sorry too to have missed the opportunity for a nearly full mini-swarm meet-up on Wednesday. I took part in a poetry reading at the Poetry Cafe in Betterton Street & didn't think to invite the London crew because I was only doing an 8-minute slot on a bill with 11 others. But Jean, Rachel & Dave paid a surprise visit, having seen it advertised on Facebook & immediately I realised that I should have notified you directly. So big apologies for that omission. It was so good to see Dave before he went back & it would have been perfect to have had you there too.

Dick, sorry to have missed both the mini-meet and your gig at the Poetry Cafe - I never check Facebook, alas! - but I've been occupied with family visitors anyway.Hope you were loudly cheered.

Happy Birthday! I love the pic of you and of the couple, too. The young woman looks like my nieces, who are identical twins and blonde goddesses.

Thanks Hattie. I liked the couple's uninhibited posture combined with her swirly dress and the background - one of those lucky shots that could never be planned.

But love, lust or mere affection comes with warnings - as that partially obscured notice at bum height on your photo seems to imply. My birthday is a few days hence and the family will foregather - but with absences. My 6 ft 4 in. grandson will be with his dad (divorced from my daughter) who is celebrating his seventieth at a Michelin-starred restaurant in London.

I am not expecting love (it's a matter of just desserts) which, in any case, needs a specific definition for every relationship - though I wouldn't say no to well-worn affection I'm a Brit, for God's sake. Life is comfortable and - through pure luck - I find myself surprisingly well-heeled.

I have a minor ambition - to drink only champage as my wine of choice for the rest of my life. Though I know that's a chimera and within a week I'd start itching for red.

For better or for worse I write, though that's no big deal; writing is also what happens when one compiles a supermarket shopping list. Despite this I know I'm writing now. Creating? If that word means anything someone else must be the judge.

You paint and I wonder if you sense the shadowy existence of paintings not yet painted. Gaps in time and space that will be filled with paintings. Your paintings. Too fanciful? If I had to answer that speculation I'd be cautiously optimistic - referring to paragraphs that could be written. Bollocks! The minute I typed that I knew they would be written. Why else am I here?

I had no idea what I was going to say when I embarked on this comment and I notice - yet again - that it is about me and not, as it should be, about you. We all like to be noticed though when you think of it that is a very small reward. Let's say that I noticed the absence of a comment by me on your blog, and you are seeing that absence eradicated though not necessarily in the way you would have preferred. Nobody, as Joe E. Brown said, is perfect.

Until a year hence.

Robbie, glad you noticed the serendipitous writing on the wall behind the oblivious lovers - I thought it was a nice touch of irony.
I don't mind at all if your comment is more about you than me since you manage to infuse it with interesting questions: how to define love? Can champagne (or love) be consumed daily without boredom setting in? Do unpainted paintings or unwritten paragraphs already exist in shadowy space?
Why are we here?
And so on.
Thank you, as always, for being here.
