WORKS IN PROGRESS

A couple of things slowly taking shape and I'm not pushing too hard. Artworks are like children, you can give them directions but there's no guarantee they'll obey and even if they do, it will be their way. I like to listen to where a particular work wants to go and that requires a lot of sitting and staring and waiting.

The box-things I make (recently named Pableaux) sometimes turn out as instigations/inspirations for paintings and vice-versa. The latest one is specifically a maquette, a 3-dimensional rough model for a painting. The painting will take quite a while to do but here's the miniature maquette for it, made of wood, cardboard, wire etc. The title is: The Cosmic Sadness of a Teen Age Girl Crying in the Shower.

I love it, Natalie. Oh, the pathos!! You've got it.

Thanks Beth, I admit I was thinking of certain times in my own teenage life but it does apply on a broader scale.

I wonder if that's pathos or bathos!

In the bath but definitely not bathos!

I tried leaving a comment on your blog, Bruce, wishing you well with the moving, but somehow the system keeps rejecting me!

Did I ever relate to this! It needs a soundtrack though: Someone pounding at the door needing to use the toilet!

Hattie, it seems to be a situation that many of us remember!

O,Natalie - children are not like artworks. Have a son who refuses to recognise me as a 'sire' - in the sense that i 'sprogged' him.

Aarrgh. Perhaps, one day, will try to 'paint' that - but not yet.

Davoh, of course artworks and children aren't like each other - I was just pulling a metaphor out of a hat.

Very sad that your son won't acknowledge you. Often it's the father who refuses to recognise his own child. If you can paint your story, do it! Don't put it off to some "later" time. After later there's always another later and then it's too late, you know? All you need is a pencil and some paper, you can make a start.

Um, Natalie - forgive me, but have now 'copied and downloaded' the internet pic of 'person in bath'. At this point would be prepared to pay AU$20. The 'original' would be worth much, much more.

Am, of course, an Aussie dingbat and know nothing about the value of such things ... heh.

Davoh, no need to pay me anything at all if you download the photo of my maquette of "Cosmic Sadness of Teenage Girl Crying in the Shower" (that's the title) for no commercial purpose. As I wrote in my post, I made it as a model for a painting I'm working on. The photo of the little maquette is only a photo, the maquette (model)is not for sale, and the painting doesn't exist as yet. So the subject of its value is not relevant.

If I post photos of some of my work or works-in-progress on the internet it's a window into my life and studio and also helpful to me as a kind of diary. I've been blogging for nearly 15 years and I do have a notice that my stuff is copyright. Obviously I don't want anyone copying my stuff, pretending it's theirs and wanting to sell it (some people have tried this). But I don't mind at all if someone shares something of mine on their blog and credits me as the artist or author.

Natalie (don't publish this) ... but the pic of "the girl in bath with shower reminds me of the holocaust. Natalie, am Australian, NOT Jewish, father and mother 'non committed' - "Calathumpian" - but final year at a bluestone 'Scotch protestant' college, lived (boarded) with a Jewish family. Their father died while was there. 'Tis a complicated story.

The simple bit is that i began to comprehend the Jewish faith, and history. Have, of course, at my age - looked at the histories of many "faiths, myths and legends" ..

... but remain in the belief of the 'goodness' of human beings - and animals - and trees - The complexity of Gaia (planet Earth) and the Cosmos.

Make of that as you choose (though might make jokes and jests about it all, sometimes).

Davoh, I can't comment on what anyone might see in an artwork of mine. It's open to all interpretations. All I know is what it represents to me, or the feelings that inspired it, and that's why I've given it the title: "The Cosmic Sadness of a Teeange Girl Crying In the Shower". That's it.

Davoh, why do you say "don't publish this"? If you write a comment it's 'published' automatically. And why do you put "NOT" in capitals to say you're not Jewish? Who cares whether you're Jewish or not? I'm not anti-semitic and don't accept any form of anti-semitism. Half of my DNA is semitic.
