EXPERIMENTS TO TEST REALITY

Latest Pableau nearly finished. Hard to photograph because of the reflective surfaces but here are a couple of shots. The back of each flat piece is painted somewhat differently from the front and you can see this in the mirrored background, including the text bubble (written wrong way round on the back so it reads right way round in its reflection).

"Everything puzzled me. I resolved to devise experiments to test reality." The sentence comes from my unfinished-probably-never-to-be finished graphic gnovel. Am taking bits of it to make more Pableaux.

Is that Leda on the swan? I'd love to read your story.
Cheers,
Mike

Mike, Leda occurred to me only after I'd made this work and it made me laugh. Of course, why not Leda!

Mike, I forgot to add the link to my in-progress graphic novel - here it is:

I've got quite a few more pages done but the whole thing has never yet quite found its form. I think I may end up by making these sort of tableaux from parts of it instead of thinking in book terms. I'd be glad to hear your view of the bits I posted at the above link.

Having seen other examples of this art form at your place, as well as pableau no. 1 that you illustrated here, I’m forming the view that this medium or art form is your most characteristic and will be remembered longest in association with your name. Do please go for it & complete the set!

Ooops, Natalie - apologies - that was from my cynical self. Mainly since i discovered "photoshop". Will never believe any so-called "photo evidence" from now on.

Hand drawn art remains something else .. que

Davoh, I'm an artist, I don't claim to represent reality nor do I want to.

Vincent, thanks. I agree, this form of expression feels right to me.

Um, Natalie, didn't really intend to test your version of "reality".
(could get into a discussion about 'particle physics' and 'string theory') .. does anything "really" exist - apart from imagination?

Natalie d'Arbeloff said...

Davoh, no problem. Well, we have to exist before our imaginations can exist.

gosh, i LOVE the pableau, they have a lot of power! I haven't dropped by in a while, trying to juggle lots at the moment but it's been so good to catch up with what you've been up to and a belated happy birthday. I enjoyed the Wyndham post too, I went to university at Norwich, just up the road from there and it brought back happy memories of those wonderful landscapes :-) best wishes , Phil

Hi Phil, good to hear from you. Next time you're in London let me know and we could meet up again for a drink. Hope all's going well. Yes the Norwich landscape is inspiring - if I saw it more often I'm sure it would influence my work.
